Located at East Alexander Middle, West Alexander Middle Schools, and Alexander High School these staff members act as liaisons to bring resources, services, business partners, parents, and volunteers into their schools. This collaboration fosters a proven community effort to help students succeed.
Our Community of Friends program is a one-on-one mentoring program for 6th through 8th graders. Volunteer mentors spend 2-4 hours a week with a child outside of the school day doing typical everyday activities. Activities are always fun, educational, and social.
Through a partnership with the Alexander County United Methodist Missional Network, Reading Partners match trained adult volunteer tutors to students at Hiddenite, Stony Point, Taylorsville and Wittenburg Elementary Schools. The program is for 2nd and 3rd grade students and was developed in lieu of currently evolving literacy laws and initiatives such as Read to Achieve. Volunteer tutors will spend 30 minutes once a week with students during the school day. Through a training process by our Reading Partners volunteer coordinator, tutors will be helping learners keep a reading journal and complete tasks that improve literary comprehension skills.
